One of the things that makes Downtown Saco so special is the people behind the businesses. Our Faces of Main Street series gives you a chance to get to know them a little better: what inspires them, what they love about Saco, and where you might bump into them around town when they’re off the clock.
Today, we’re featuring Finestkind, where Victoria & Tom Barthelmes serve up mouthwatering breakfast, brunch, and lunch options in Pepperell Square!
MEET FINESTKIND!
Q: What inspired you to open your business here in Saco?
Victoria + Tom: There were a few different factors that brought us to Saco. First, we always felt the city had undeniable New England charm. Second, we wanted a place that was part of a community, that people felt proud to have. We felt we could really achieve that outside of Portland. There was also the opportunity to own the building the restaurant was in, which was very important to us from a long-term business standpoint. We intend to be here a while! Lastly, I’d say how welcoming and accommodating the city has been to new businesses.
Q: What’s one memory or moment from running Finestkind that you’ll never forget?
Victoria: I think bringing our team up to Topsham to cater a prime rib dinner for a 120 person wedding of some dear friends of ours at an old grange hall that had one outlet in the kitchen.
Q: If someone is visiting your business for the first time, what’s the must-try item on your menu?
Tom: I think each member of our team would have a different answer for this one! Some would say the brown butter waffle, and the hashbrowns are definitely unique, but I’m going to go with our bacon, sausage, or Canadian bacon. We cure, smoke, or grind everything in-house and to me it makes all the difference.
Q: When you’re not at work, where do you love to spend time in Saco?
Victoria: We are always at work! But when we’re not, one of the best places to stop on the way home is the trail at the Saco Heath Preserve. A beautiful place to decompress!
Q: If you could swap places with another Main Street business for a day, which would it be?
Tom: It’s gotta be our neighbors at Goodbye Tattoo. Those guys are always in such a good mood! Plus it could be a new outlet for Victoria’s artistic side.
